Our Grade 1 Vocabulary Building Worksheets are the Best!
WE'VE DONE THE RESEARCH...
When your student can read the 300+ reading words in these vocabulary building activities, they will be reading at a solid beginning 2nd Grade Level. Lessons 1-36 provide important worksheet activities to assist in mastering the essential 340 Grade 1 vocabulary words.  Words were selected from a detailed computer analysis of word frequency as seen in popular Grade 1 textbooks, including Houghton Mifflin, Scholastic and Accelerated Reader. Each LESSON covers 10 new vocabulary words and typically requires 1 week to attain mastery (when taught in a Grade 1 classroom).  In a tutoring situation this can be done in one day! Words have been mathematically arranged from "most-common" words at the beginning to the "lesser-common" toward the end, thereby providing you the most logical and efficient order for instruction throughout the year.  Exercises include "Recognition Memory" testing - "Scrambled Letters" - and "Sentence Writing Practice."  Sentence writing for Lessons 1-9 is typically too difficult for 1st Grade students so we devised a special  word matching activity to gain familiarity with the new words. Students who master these words typically score in the top 10% of Grade 1 in end of year testing (i.e. Woodcock-Johnson Revised).

LESSON ACTIVITY TEACHES WORDS FAST
When clicking the LESSON link below, you will view two worksheets. Worksheet A covers he first 5 words taught on Monday and Tuesday, while the worksheet "B" covers the 5 words taught Wednesday and Thursday. This is the typical schedule for Grade 1 classroom teachers. If you are working with one student (or an older group), you can typically advance at one or two lessons per day. Each lesson teaches word meaning, alphabetical order and sentence writing.

FRIDAY TEST
The "Friday Test" can be given at the end of the week to further solidify memorization of the vocabulary words. This is a teacher administered test that is actually fun to give because you use "riddles" to get students to answer the questions. For example - "Which words means to hop up and down?" (The answer: "jump")
. Progressing at the rate of 10 words per week enables students to learn about 350 words for the year. This can be used with an entire class or with students who are working at their own pace (as in some Remedial, Special-Ed and Gifted classes.
